An Unholy Alliance in Support of Israel

NEW YORK -- In the "strange bedfellows" department, one of the oddest pairings on the current political scene is American Jews and the Christian right. Yes, both groups back Israel. But their long-term visions for its future are miles apart.
Consider the following quotation from the Web site of Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, a strong supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's recent actions: "Indeed, there will finally be such a fullness of Israel when their hardness and blindness to the gospel is overcome as to vastly enrich the whole world. For the almost unbelievable truth is that all Israel will be saved. The fullness of Gentiles will climax with the fullness of Israel." It's hard to believe that this vision of an Israel in which all the Jews convert to Christianity is compatible with the vision for Israel held by most Jews.

Definitions of Semitism
Two things are missing in all of these attacks. No one ever tells us what they mean by anti-Semitism. Curiously, by the classic definition of Semitic, most Arabs are Semites and few Israelis are. Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary, unabridged, Second Edition defines: Semite, Shemite, n. a member of any of the peoples whose language is Semitic, including the Jews, Arabs, Assyrians, Phoenicians, Babylonians, etc., not, specifically, a Jew.

I Criticize Israel Because I Am Jewish

"Yes, but what about the Palestinians?" That is a question I always hear when I criticize Israel's policies. Why point the finger of blame only at Israel? Why not criticize the Palestinians too? Don't you want to be even-handed? Supporters of Israeli policy often make criticism of Palestinians a litmus test. "I might listen to your critique of Israel," they seem to say, "but only if you first prove your loyalty by criticizing the Palestinians."

Jews and others in the U.S. who support Israel's policies have no such qualms. They are sure they know where the blame lies, and they shout their views loud enough to be heard all the way to Washington. The Bush administration has no reason to change its pro-Israeli tilt unless it hears a much greater outcry against Israeli excesses. That outcry would have an especially big impact if it came from U.S. Jews. As long as Jews are baffled by the problem of even-handedness and don't speak out, U.S. policy will not change.
Jews have another option. We could stop worrying about "the other side" and look solely at what our side, our own representative, the State of Israel, does. Many of us have not consciously chosen Israel to represent us. Yet Israel has always insisted that it acts on behalf of all Jews everywhere. All Jews bear a shared responsibility for Israel's actions unless we publicly proclaim: "Not in our name."
I criticize Israel, not the Palestinians, because I am Jewish, not Palestinian. I criticize Israel to encourage Jews to take responsibility for our own behavior, rather than casting blame across the border.
If our self-appointed representatives in Israel have done wrong, and if we have not stopped them, it matters not at all whether others have done wrong. It is not our task, nor our place, to tell others how to live their lives. Our task is to take responsibility for setting our own house in order. That is a full-time, lifetime job.

Israel's Jewish Critics Aren't 'Self-Hating'
There is no path to Jewish security that does not also lead us to global security for all peoples.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Every day, I receive anguished letters, e-mails and phone calls from members of my congregation and others who have been tagged with the label "self-hating Jews." Why? Solely because they've raised questions about Israel's policy toward Palestinians.
There is something deeply hurtful about that term and about the way the Jewish community is treating its dissenters, something reminiscent of the cultural repressiveness of 1950s McCarthyism and its labeling of dissidents as "anti-American." Jews in America are all Jews by choice.

All of us are outraged at the immoral acts of Palestinian terrorists who blow up Israelis as they sit at a Seder table, or shop in their stores, or sit in cafes or ride in buses. We know that these acts cannot be forgiven, no matter how they have been provoked.
But many of us also understand that Israeli treatment of Palestinians has been immoral and outrageous. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled their homes in 1948, and recent Israeli historical research has shown that most of them fled not because they were responding to the appeal of Arab leaders, but because they were terrified at the acts of violence by right-wing Israeli terrorists or because they were actually physically forced from their homes by the Israeli army. (The slaying of some 250 Palestinian civilians in a town that had indicated loyalty to Israel, Deir Yassin, was intentionally aimed at convincing Palestinians that they would not be safe in a new Israeli state, no matter how much they wished to live in peace.) Palestinian refugees and their families now number more than 3 million, and many live in horrifying conditions in refugee camps under Israeli military rule.
Despite Israel's promises in 1993 at Oslo to end its occupation of the Palestinian territories by May 4, 1999, the actual path Israel took was the opposite. After a right-wing Israeli murdered peace-oriented Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Israel actually increased the number of West Bank settlers, from around 120,000 in 1993 to some 200,000 by the time Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak met with Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat at Camp David.

Tay Yush. Yush Guvul. Gush Shalom. Bat Shalom. Peace Now. I'm getting confused navigating the Israeli peace movement. But this is not different from our own in the U.S. - no one can speak officially for the party line, there are tendencies within tendencies within tendencies. Yonathan (forgive my attempts at phonetic spellings), however, who I have just met, is emphatic on the point that all these groups are anti-occupation. "The issue that people argue about is the right of return," he says.

Jewish Unity for a Just Peace
Jewish Unity for a Just Peace is an international gathering of grassroots Jewish activists who support a just, viable and lasting peace based on the principles of international law, requiring a complete end to Israel's Occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Until the complete end of the Occupation, no permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is possible. Through the Occupation, Israel has confiscated Palestinian land, demolished Palestinian homes, imposed closures, harassed Palestinian civilians at checkpoints, built Jewish-only bypass roads and settlements, and interfered with Palestinian trade, commerce, education, family unification, and religious worship. Because of the strategic location of its settlements and military installations, Israel will be able to continue its matrix of control over the lives of Palestinians even if it retains only a small portion of the occupied territories. Thus, continuing the Occupation will only lead to continued friction and hostility. Ending the Occupation is critical to ending the violence from both sides.
Why are Jews, including American Jews, forming Junity? We are coming together in order to explore ways to coordinate the efforts of the many Jewish organizations working for a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians. We are motivated to do this work because of our rich Jewish culture and heritage, which inspires us to speak out against oppression, particularly oppression committed "in our name." American Jews play a particularly crucial role in improving U.S. policy towards Israel and the Palestinians. Thus far, the United States has badly served all parties by supporting Israel nearly unconditionally while the occupation of the Palestinian people continues. American Jews can urge our elected representatives to exert political and economic pressure on the Israeli government to end the occupation, and resume negotiations in good faith for a just, lasting and viable peace settlement with the Palestinians.

Jewish Voices Against the Occupation
The extensive opposition within the Jewish community to Israel's 34-year long occupation of Palestine needs to be voiced boldly and loudly.
We are, therefore, planning to publish a series of ads in US and Israeli newspapers calling for:
¥ an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem
¥ a complete evacuation of all the settlements
¥ a return to the pre-1967 borders.
Given the urgency of the situation, we also call for:
¥ the immediate deployment of an international peace-keeping force in the occupied territories
¥ the suspension of military aid to Israel until the end of occupation.

Jewish Voices Against Israel's Occupation of Palestinian Territories
The occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem is killing Palestinians and Israelis alike and destroying Israel from within. There can be no peace or security for either until Israel completely evacuates its settlements in Palestinian territories, ends its military occupation, and returns to its pre-1967 borders.
As Jews, we call upon Israel:
to agree to the immediate establishment of an international peacekeeping force in the occupied territories to protect civilians from violence by the Israeli military and settlers; to cease building or expanding settlements as a first step toward their complete evacuation.
As Jews and U.S. taxpayers, we call upon the U.S. Government:
to suspend military aid to Israel, which is used to maintain the occupation, until Israel withdraws completely from the occupied territories; to reduce economic aid to Israel by the amount spent on maintaining the settlements until all are evacuated; to redirect this reduction of economic aid toward reconstructing the devastated infrastructure of Palestine.
We urge Israel to acknowledge that it bears significant historical responsibility for the dispossession of the Palestinian people, and to work toward a just solution to the plight of Palestinian refugees.
Finally, deeply distressed over the lives lost in desperate attacks by Palestinians, we call upon the Palestinian Authority to make every effort to curtail acts of violence against civilians in Israel.
Israel's security policies harm all the peoples of the Middle East and make Israel less secure, not more.
THE SETTLEMENTS MUST GO.
THE OCCUPATION MUST END.
THERE CAN BE NO PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE.
