Idealist.org - Jobs: Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative Education and Outreach Associate 2009-07-02
The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), a progressive legal and educational organization, seeks a full-time Education and Outreach (E&O) Associate for its Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative (GGJI). The Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative at CCR resulted from the Supreme Court victory in Rasul v. Bush in June of 2004 which affirmed the right of men detained at Guantánamo to challenge their detention. Since then, CCR has recruited and trained hundreds of attorneys from across the country and secured habeas representation in federal court for the vast majority of the men imprisoned in Guantánamo Bay. CCR has been a leader in both coordinating this effort and in implementing the litigation, international advocacy and public education strategies for this human rights movement. On January 22, 2009, President Barack H. Obama signed an Executive Order to close Guantánamo Bay by January 22, 2010. While CCR welcomed this executive policy shift, it did not resolve the many legal and political issues raised by U.S. practices. First, work still needs to be done at Guantánamo itself. CCR is committed to ensuring that the men who remain are treated humanely and safely repatriated to their home country or resettled in a safe third country if they are at risk for torture or persecution at home. Second, we continue to work to ensure that Guantánamo is not replaced with a new regime of detention without trial in the United States or proxy detention in other countries. Third, we continue to fight against new proposals for interrogation, detention and rendition practices that violate U.S. and international law. Finally, CCR is still heavily involved in the coordination and litigation of the over 100 habeas cases proceeding in the DC District Court challenging the unlawful detention of those who have been detained now for over seven years in Guantánamo Bay without charge. The Guantánamo team at CCR consists of four attorneys, one E&O associate, and three legal workers. The Education and Outreach Associate will provide non-litigation support to the legal team by participating in work related to the safe repatriation and resettlement of the men who remain detained in Guantánamo, developing strategic non-litigation approaches to client advocacy and public education, exporting CCR expertise on Guantánamo-related issues to lawmakers and public policy experts, and developing reports and other materials for use in legislative advocacy, and campaigns. As the Guantánamo facility closes, CCR will continue to challenge torture, rendition and unlawful detention. As that happens, we expect that staff in the GGJI will have the opportunity to either continue work related to global detentions and human rights, or move into other docket areas of the Center based on their interests and the needs of the organization. Job Responsibilities: * In coordination with CCR attorneys, proactively advocate for repatriation and resettlement of men detained in Guantánamo before U.S. and foreign governments and international agencies * Track policy and legislative developments that will impact CCRs Guantánamo clients; develop and implement advocacy strategies * Provide strategic leadership and coordination with NGOs, government agencies and habeas counsel about legislative developments, in particular regarding preventive detention * Initiate, write, edit, and participate in collective writing/editing/review of advocacy reports regarding Guantánamo, global detention, torture and accountability * Develop and write action alerts calling on supporters to advocate on issues specifically related to resettlement and repatriation, Congressional and Obama Administration actions, and other relevant issues * Write and produce fact sheets about Guantánamo, global detention and accountability * Update CCR website on Guantánamo-related issues and developments (non-legal) * Respond to requests for speakers from Guantánamo team for public events
