A Positive Universe

In a positive universe, EVERYONE is treated well, fairly, and with equal concern.

All human beings are connected by biology as well as an amazing array of similar, positive and humane, spiritual and moral beliefs. In a positive universe, we take responsibility for all of humankind, including our neighbors, however distant, as much as we do for those who share our own cultures, beliefs, and national borders.

A universe is a perception of all that matters. Most nation states, however, are are consumed with national hubris (e.g. God Bless America) and therefore their inhabitants perceive their own state as the universe that matters most. Such arrogance and lack of enlightenment severely weaken our collective potential for creating a better world. The most forceful and imperial nations present the greatest threats to world peace and stability and are the most responsible for large-scale poverty and suffering across the world. This is because imperial nations often impose dysfunctional relationships, policies, and systems on lesser powers in order to harvest their resources, take advantage of their desperation, consolidate their allegiances for other global strategies, and/or to involve them in violent political campaigns.

We need to broaden our universe! We must include ALL others in our perception of who WE are, and to strive for peace, justice and equality for ALL. To think otherwise is to perpetuate global suffering and injustice.

We are open-minded Democrats who believe that the Democratic Party must reflect and act on its unifying mission or it will soon become irrelevant. We do not give blanket support to all policies and persons in the party. Various aspects of the party continue to drift in a direction that contradicts the core values of its greatest supporters. Its leaders speak only of "middle class" as if there is no suffering that occurs for working and struggling families in poverty. It speaks of killing others as if that is the only path to our security, while ignoring the roots of confrontation, or the possibilities for constructive engagement, peace empowerment, confidence-building measures, and peaceful resolutions. It speaks of national pride, as if we are the only people on earth who are worthy of concern. And, the party leadership only timidly confronts the forces of greed and destruction who lie to us as to why they needlessly send our young people to kill and die, maim and be maimed, on a horrific and massive scale. We need to take back the party and make it inclusive of other liberal-progressive parties -- especially The Green Party and those who seek a more equitable redistribution of national and world resources -- in order to gain the benefit of their values and commitment. As long as we live in a two-party representative republic, without proportional representation or instant runoff voting, and not a true democracy, there is no other shorter-term solution.

If the Democratic Party does not soon live up to its potential as an advocate for positive social change, then an alternative movement will be necessary and inevitable. See, for example:

Atlantic Free Press, Netherlands: Why Quitting the Party Makes Sense - 27 September 2007

We are diverse world citizens who believe that extreme nationalism is the equivalent of geographic racism. We are spiritual, moral, and enlightened beings who believe that religous fundamentalism in government is divisive and anti-democratic. The forces of greed typically use geography and religion to define a people apart from the world at large, which results in fear (and therefore compliance to the dissolution of basic, universal rights at home and abroad), hoarding of resources, rejection of mutually beneficial relationships, and lack of cooperation for a sustainable environment . These are the primary causes of large-scale suffering across the world. We urge our readers to work locally, nationally, and/or globally to create a positive universe for themselves and others -- to whatever extent possible -- in order to live well. If we all do our part, a better world, and thus a "positive universe," is possible.
